The modern space lends itself to collaborative working and provides a flexible working option in a relaxed environment for remote workers, home workers and employees looking for a private space to work in.

The Works are fully equipped, with access to high speed broadband, printing and postal services plus meeting room space and the opportunity to receive support and advice from a fully accredited Business Advisor. With a coordinator on hand throughout the week to facilitate the work space and provide a personal touch, many businesses are introduced to companies and individuals they can work with and do business together.

Deborah Smith, one of the coordinators for The Works, said:

Our members love the space we provide. They love the relaxed setting and feel comfortable and focused, with the added bonus of collaborating with others. Another great aspect is the flexibility of the memberships and the 24/7 access.

You can access all the facilities, whether it is conference calls, using the meeting rooms, printing or simply making a cup of tea and sending some emails. The diversity of the space and its use is what makes it so appealing to so many different people and businesses.”

When you start a new business you have so many fears about how you will make it work, will it provide a suitable income and how do you sell what you do to other businesses.
That’s how I felt when I first had the thought about starting an aerial photography company.

The path to where I am today was not an easy one. Firstly I had never flown a drone in my life so that was a good place to start. With a little research and shopping around I dived into the world of drone flying and immediately I was hooked. It was amazing to be able to take a love of
photography and the camera to places and heights that I could only of ever dreamt of.

After several months I made the decision to become a qualified UAV pilot. Its been a long time since I had to study for exams but all the hard work paid off and after 3 long days and 3 exams I passed and became fully qualified. Now came the hard part where I had to write a long manual to present to the Civil Aviation Authority in order to receive a Permission for Commercial Operations certificate. At the beginning of March I become a fully CAA Approved UAV Pilot and my dream of running my own business become a reality, it felt amazing to have got this far and Up & Away Vision was born.

Since then I have become We, as my wife now plays a big part in the business and we have been flying our drones all over South Devon and have had the privilege of filming some big events in Torbay. Our most recent event was Brixfest, where we covered the whole weekend from both the ground and the air. A full video for the event is currently being edited ready for release very soon.

During our first months trading we have met some incredible people throughout Torbay and have finally shrugged the shyness that would have us freeze on social media platforms. Now we love to meet new faces and relish all the opportunities we are presented with.

In the next few months we are taking part in numerous events where we are giving talks and demonstrations on how drones are used and around the legalities of drone use. We are excited to be part of the upcoming English Riviera Film Festival where we have two films being shown highlighting the beautiful English Riviera.

A big part of what we do is about showing that drones are not there in order for us to spy on people or invade privacy but used responsibly and inline with legislation they provide us a unique view of the world around us and in cases around the world have been used to save lives.

Our photography and filming services encompass a wide range of uses including promotion, marketing, estate and property, events and weddings. We fly using the latest drone technology and can capture video in 4K ultra high definition along with 16 megapixel photos for those stunning aerial shots we love to capture.

If the future of Up & Away Vision is as good as the first few months have been then we cant wait.

A later than planned round up

File_000 (1)

Each Friday I run the #BoostTorbay chat 8-9pm and that’s great an all and more people appear to be getting involved on a weekly basis which is great to see.

However, the other elements that make up #BoostTorbay i.e. the weekly note and this round up on the blog has been far from consistent.  I’d like to apologies for this lack of consistency an I promise to do better in the coming weeks – time management is key here I think.

We are just over a week to the #BoostTorbay Birthday bash, celebrating 5 years of the hash tag being online and we’re busy working behind the scenes to deliver a fantastic and informative evening.

If you’ve not got your tickets yet, there are few spaces left, get yours here.

Rachael Howourth (@RachHowourth)  of Momentum South West shares the story of the first 6 months in business.

IMG_5425

Why did you start the business Momentum South West?

I’d dreamt for years of running my own business and I’d always known that if I did, it would be a consultancy of some kind.  Working in Sales and Leadership for 20 years in a large corporate business has taught me a huge amount about how to be successful in business.  I’ve sold to many different types of customers and managed many different types of staff – I’ve definitely lived and breathed the business world.

But the main reason the business began when it did is because that’s when my confidence level had reached a point where I thought I had enough to offer.  I’d been working with a business, just giving some advice and support, and the new strategies I’d advised on had delivered an uplift in business results of over 50%.  That’s when I realised I had skills that I could really use to help others’ succeed.

How’s it going so far?

It’s going really great.  I’ve now got clients using each of my offerings; strategy, training and coaching.  Some of my clients are really successful businesses who are investing in keeping it that way, and some are micro SMEs.

I’ve got so many ideas for the future but I’m keeping my feet firmly on the ground for now.  I’ve built a few Training Courses which are my bread and butter; these are ASPIRE Consultative Selling, Negotiation Skills, Leadership Skills and Coaching Skills.

What’s been the hardest part?

The hardest part during the last 6 months has been the time it’s taken to align all of the necessary parts of the business.  I’m making sure it’s a brand I’m building and that it becomes easily recognisable, as well as builds loyalty.  The marketing activity takes a long time.  I know I could now give it to a professional to handle, but they can’t think about my business the way I do.  I’ve learnt how to build a website, how to rank on Google using SEO tactics, how to engage in email marketing, how to blog, how to optimise photos, how to start and market a You Tube channel, how to use Instagram for business.  The list goes on….

What have you enjoyed the most about the first 6 months in business?

I’ve enjoyed the feedback from clients.  Reviews have been left on my Facebook page, Google and sent to me in emails and the positivity has been overwhelming.  I did some workshops for Natwest Plc which had amazing feedback and some of my coaching clients are enjoying results they’d only previously dreamt of.  It makes me feel incredibly proud and excited for the future.  If I can achieve that in the first 6 months in business, who knows what I can do for Momentum South West in 5 years.

The other thing I really enjoy is public speaking.  I’ve done quite a few breakfast seminars where I speak on a chosen topic for the benefit of the audience.  I like doing it and it always opens up new client opportunities.

Where’s it all heading?

I do have a vision.  It’s a vision for 2 years time, maybe longer.  I plan to expand the Training Course offering by bringing in different Trainers who are experienced in sectors which compliment my specialisms of Sales and Leadership.  I also intent to bring in a customer relationship manager and and digital marketing exec.

But the really big dream….is to open a Coaching Retreat.  A place of solace where the big hitters from the city can escape to Devon to invest in their own personal development.  I hope for it to be a beautiful barn in the country somewhere, with accommodation and facilities done to the highest standard.

Artizan Gallery to hold Exhibition for Marc Heaton

ag-pr(Torbay – 30 May 2017) Artizan Gallery will be exhibiting an exciting selection of works by Marc Heaton in June, as part of the Artizan 2017 Solo Series.

Marc Heaton is a versatile Welsh artist, born in 1973 in Pontypridd.  A fluent Welsh speaker, Marc graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Central St Martins’ College of Art and Design in 1996, studying under Eileen Cooper (RA) and Maurice Cockrill (RA).  He has been working as an artist for over two decades and is now based in Torquay.

Having spent the majority of his summer holidays in France, Marc’s stylistic development was heavily influenced by observing sailors, circus performers, and day-to-day characters on the streets and in bars and restaurants on the continent.  Other artists’ work has also had an impact on his paintings and sculpture, including Chagall, Miro, Matisse, Ronald Searle, and early illustrations in Punch magazine.  Marc’s studio is filled with a humourous mix of found objects, paintings, drawings, and sculptures

Exploring many genres over the years, Marc now produces whimsical, poetic, and humourous pieces, creating works filled with fascinating characters and gripping concepts.  These paintings all begin with a search for a character to build the work around, sifting through the thousands of character studies and sketches that Marc has made over the years.

Extraordinary Gathering will run from Saturday 10th until Friday 30th June in Artizan’s Garden Gallery.  The Private View opening event will be held from 6-8PM on Saturday 10th June.  The exhibition is curated and stewarded by Artizan Gallery – 7 Lucius Street, Torquay TQ2 5UW.

Marc Heaton’s exhibition will be running alongside Jennifer Harris’ exhibition, Below the Surface: A Retrospective.

About Artizan Gallery (@ArtizanGallery)

Artizan Gallery was opened by Julie Brandon in 2014 in response to a 2012 ‘Open Space’ event which asked the question: “What is Torbay’s Cultural Future?”.  Determined to nurture and contribute to the thriving artistic community in Torbay, Julie took inspiration from places like Birdwood House in Totnes and TAAG in Teignmouth, aiming to create an elegant and comfortable space to promote local artists’ talent.  2017 sees Artizan Gallery embarking on a bold new venture: the 2017 Solo Series will run throughout the year, with a focus on showcasing individual artists in month-long exhibitions.

At The Torbay Holistic Support service, we offer a complete package of Emotional Well-being and Holistic Therapy- fully person centred with the aim of not only providing support for people suffering from stress and anxiety- but to educate in a wider sense of the importance of emotional well-being.

Our Counselling Service is led by Dexter Mclaughlin BACP – who promotes Person Centred Counselling- recently live on Hiblio TV at Torbay hospital.

JENS STALL.jpg

I am Jenny-Louise, I run the Holistic Therapy and Anxiety support service and have been a trained therapist for 11 years- my speciality is working with Guided Relaxation in order to help with all types of stress- this has proved to be very successful with many clients in the past two years that we have been operating.

I also use Reiki and Crystals, in my work-if people believe in the healing powers or not- the therapeutic benefits cannot be denied- clients report feeling calm and at ease and more centred during and after treatments.

As part of Educating people on the benefits of Holistic Therapy, for many years I have been running workshops- which are a lot of fun, but also packed with information on self care.

I also offer a little something to tourists to Torbay- in partnership with Sharon Nelson at the Heart of Torbay Shop – we offer a holistic treatment followed by a Devon Cream tea! great if the weather is not too good, we are located close to the sea front.

We have had some support in the bay which has been great- I do feel we have a way to go yet in encouraging people to get help if they are suffering from any kind of stress. I also believe in making it affordable for people to come along to any of our sessions- the important thing is to get the support you need and you deserve.

I hope to develop the service further over the next few years- continuing to build on what we have created with our person centred holistic approach to support.
